Any visitor to the city can spot the waste water stagnating along the roadside, just metres away from the pick-up stand, that emit strong odour around the commercial hub, but there's no action forthcoming from the authorities till date. While MMC sanitary officials informed that the civic body has issued notices to two hotels in the locality to stop the waste water and sewage discharge, the situation has not improved. MMC officials attributed the problem to the underground cross drain which is suspected to have been chocked by a broken slab and plastic waste.
"The municipality cannot take up the work since an underground water pipeline passes alongside the cross drain. Since the work is delicate in nature, the PWD and other agencies should be roped in to overcome the problem," remarked a MMC official.
Incidentally, a couple of years ago, a similar situation had arisen at the same spot, resulting in water contamination after PWD workers damaged an underground pipeline while making way for the waste water.
Sources said the problem has been brought to the notice of the MMC chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai and the local MLA Digmabar Kamat, but in vain. Local shopkeepers have cried foul over the inaction by the authorities to stem the rot.
