A group of farmers from Curtorim have claimed their standing paddy has been destroyed after water gushed into their fields, coupled with the recent showers that lashed the state.
Curtorim Independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco told the media that he has found that the standing paddy has been affected by the water accumulation due to the heavy showers that lashed the state and after the release of water after fish harvesting.
“I have taken cognizance of the damage caused to the standing paddy. I will pursue the matter of compensation for the affected farmers with the government,” Reginaldo said, adding that those affected by the water accumulation certainly deserve compensation.
The Curtorim MLA said he has written a letter to the Revenue Minister and the government to issue directions to the taluka mamlatdars to ensure that water is released from the bandhs for fishing till the paddy is harvested.
“If this system is put in place, water from the bundhs will have to be released for fishing after the harvesting of paddy”, he said, adding that he would petition the government to pay adequate compensation to the affected farmers.
