State told to conduct EIA study on ropeway project

Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) on Thursday asked the State government to conduct an environment impact assessment study and hold a public hearing regarding the ropeway project proposed from Panaji to Reis Magos.

The Environment Assessment Committee (EAC) has also sought that the report be submitted to the State Pollution Control Board.

“The issues emerged and response to the issues shall be incorporated in the EIA report,” the directive states. 

EAC has also advised that the public hearing be conducted to get  suggestions and objections of people and that terms of reference should be prepared based on report of project with respect to pros and  cons of the project, impact of solid waste on Mandovi estuary,  sociological impact of the project over a period of 30-50  years, vehicular traffic management and parking facilities, disaster  management plan etc.   

The EIA draft report has to be prepared based  on suggestions of people including the terms of reference and has to be finalised only after the GSPCB conducts a public hearing on the project.


The Rs 100 cr project which is being developed M/s Royal Rides Private Limited will give tourists a birds eye view of the 1.5 kilometer stretch of the river.

As per the project proponents, 288 trips have been scheduled per day and each trip will carry 8 passengers. Project will also provide job opportunities to around 300 people. 

The operating agency for the project had been approved by the State tourism board in 2016 on a build, finance, operate and transfer basis.
