His message to the seminarians, staff and the audience was indeed relevant at a time, when the Church is challenged to remain in dialogue with signs of the times in our days. His message effectively resonated with the cultural programme that marked the Seminary Day.
Sem Augustin Alfonso, acting in the Konkani play, Ben’nul (Parasitic Plant), written by Vincent D’Silva and directed by Frs Polly Lobo and Simon Fernandes, powerfully portrayed the struggle of the common men subdued by exploitative and oppressive socio-political conditions.
The play provides an explosive message in the time of demonetisation and widespread corruption. The other actors of the play also acted supremely well and the stage setting was apt for the occasion.
Ms Kimberley excelled in her lead role in the musical operetta, Harbinger, with her melodious voice, leading the audience to become messengers of Mercy in our society. It was scripted by Fr Simiao and Fr Polly and was set to music by Fr Simon D’Cunha and ably directed by Ms Tamsin Gomes.
The seminarians and other actors did justice to their roles with their singing, music and narrations.
The Seminary Orchestra comprised of 55 seminarians with violins, cellos, double bass, trumpets, horns, saxophones, trombone, clarinets and flutes gave a rousing welcome to the gathering by playing the composition of W A Mozart called “Marsch K V 215”.
‘Quartet’ an ensemble of four, delighted the audience with a rare glimpse of combination of brass and woodwind which included the euphonium, tenor horn, saxophone and trumpet.
“Blowing in the Wind”, a very popular composition of Bob Dylon was presented by the Santa Cecilia Choir of the Seminary, which is known for its polyphonic singing which has been its hallmark for over a century.
Fr Simon D’Cunha arranged the musical score of the whole programme and was ably supported in direction by Fr Simiao Fernandes and Fr Polly Lobo.
Earlier, Rector Fr Aleixo Menezes welcomed the guests and appreciated the hard work put in by all the seminarians in all the spheres of their formation.
