Non-Governmental Organisation Street Providence has provided shelter to a handicapped lady from the South Goa district hospital, but not before the NGO Managing Trustee Donand Fernandes slamming the authorities for the failure to take care of homeless women.
The lady was picked up from the road by a resident of Raia and admitted in the South Goa district hospital. After undergoing treatment for two months, the hospital was set to discharge the lady.
Donald told the media that since the women had no place to go, Street Providence stepped in to take the lady to its shelter home.
He demanded to know why the One Stop Centre set up in South Goa at Margao has not taken the lady to the centre. “The OSC is supposed to take care of women for some days, before shifting the women to the shelter home. But, we have come in the picture since the OSC has pointed that such women do not come under the Centre’s norms”, he said.
Donald slammed Social Welfare Director Ajit Panchwadkar for questioning the request made to the government to sanction Rs 20,000 to look after each women at the shelter. “Who will take care of such women, who cannot go anywhere. Tomorrow, if Street Providence does not give such women shelter, she would return back on the roads. The Social Welfare Director should know and understand the problems faced by the NGO”, he said.
