Don’t compromise on quality of helmets: Mandrekar
Stresses on need to observe traffic rules to minimize road accidents

Expressing concern over rise in fatalities among the youth in road accidents, Art and Culture Minister, Dayanand Mandrekar on Friday cautioned the younger generation on need to follow traffic rules to avoid accidents and save precious lives.
“Most of those involved in road accidents are in the age group of 18 to 35. We need to put away our careless attitude when it comes to observing traffic discipline. We need to take control of our lives and those of the pedestrians,” Mandrekar said.
Mandrekar was addressing a gathering of students at a function to observe the “6th State Road Safety Week “ 2016” organized by the Directorate of Transport at the Fr Agnel Institute of Tehnology & Design in Assagao on Friday.
He further stressed on the need of using proper headgear as most accidents among the two-wheelers were due to head injuries.
“Many try to compromise on the quality of helmets and buy cheap ones from the roadside. We need to wear proper helmets of ISI mark,” he said.
Complementing the officers of the RTO and the police for doing their best to rein in the offenders, the minister stressed on the need to create awareness among the road users to ensure safety to life and minimize accidents in the State.
He said most road accidents occur due to man-made errors which includes over speeding, rash and reckless driving.
Earlier, RTO Inspector Minesh Tar gave a presentation on Road Safety to students. He said lack of knowledge of traffic rules and failure to interpret traffic sign boards lead to serious accidents.
Director of the Agnel Institute Fr Victor Rebello, Assistant Director Fr Sebsatiao Rodrigues and Principal Dr V Mariappan attended the function.
Director of Transport Sunil Masurkar and GOACAN convenor Roland Martins were also present.
