VALPOI

The body of Aditya Deepak Kumar Satpati from Belagavi, who drowned at Surla waterfall on Sunday, was recovered on Monday after an intensive eight-hour search operation.

Teams from the Valpoi Fire and Emergency Services, Forest Department, Indian Navy, local villagers and volunteers took part despite heavy rain and strong currents.

Aditya, originally from Odisha, had reportedly slipped into a deep pool while bathing with friends, who were unable to rescue him. The search, suspended on Sunday evening due to darkness and rising water levels, resumed on Monday morning under even more dangerous conditions. His body was found at around 3 pm and retrieved with ropes because of the steep terrain.

Valpoi Police conducted the inquest before sending the body for post-mortem and later handing it over to his family.

Authorities warn against entering waterfall

VALPOI: Authorities have urged the public to avoid restricted areas at Surla waterfall and to refrain from risky visits that may lead to fatalities. The site is highly dangerous during monsoon due to sudden rises in water levels and strong currents.

Located within Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, entry without permission is prohibited. Recent warnings and enforcement actions, including against visitors from Karnataka, highlight repeated violations. Officials have again stressed safety rules, citing flash floods, slippery terrain and wildlife movement risks there.
