Supplies to Goa resume after veggies flood Belagavi market

BELAGAVI

Vegetables flooded the wholesale market in Belagavi after a gap of three days and supplies to Goa resumed on Tuesday.

After the district administration had imposed a 48-hour lockdown in Belagavi on Saturday and Sunday and with Monday being the weekly off in the wholesale vegetable market, the supplies and trading activities in the market resumed on Tuesday morning.

Both the designated venues of the wholesale vegetable markets were crowded with over 150 vehicles loaded with vegetables reaching Belagavi since the wee hours of Tuesday.

The rush was such that social distancing took a back seat as there was no space for the parking of the vehicles.

“A large number of vehicles started arriving at Belagavi past midnight. About 75 vehicles -- 40 by private traders and about 35 vehicles of the Horticulture Corporation of Goa -- were dispatched to Goa,” said Aditya Patil, one of the suppliers to Goa.

However, rates of vegetables have inflated due to rising demand from Goa and other areas. Another reason for the inflated rates was the shorter supplies of some vegetables from border villages in Maharashtra.

“As Maharashtra has relaxed the lockdown, vegetables from Maharashtra did not arrive in Belagavi and were diverted to other places in that state, due to which rates of vegetables have marginally increased,” Adiya said.

However, it seems Goans are being left at the mercy of the BJP high command once again. To add insult to injury vaccinations of the 18-44 age group have again been stopped as have those above 45…
