PANAJI: Former Director of Mines Arvind Lolayekar who was suspended by the government for his involvement in the Goa Mining Scam has been reinstated, but hasn’t been given a posting yet, sources have confirmed.
"Lolayekar has been reinstated, but hasn't been given a post yet," the source informed.
It is yet unclear whether the government is considering giving him an important posting.
Lolayekar was suspended in April 2012 by the Parrikar government no sooner was the Justice Shah Commission report tabled in Parliament and made public. Two years later, in March 2014 he was arrested by the SIT investigating the Goa Mining Case and several cases of illegal mining filed against several persons and subsequently released on bail.
Lolayekar has been under suspension for three and a half years while the government has failed to come up with any conclusion or any definite charges in the Goa Mining Case.
While speaking about the suspension, then chief minister Manohar Parrikar had said that it was a suspension pending inquiry even as he accused Lolayekar of allowing illegalities to take place under his watch as director.
Lolayekar has several years of his career left and is scheduled to retire only in 2021 on attaining 60 years.
