Within 24-hours, Goa Police on Friday managed to trace and nab the tainted swimming coach, Surajit Ganguly, who was on the run after being accused of raping a minor who was training under him.

The SP North Goa, Utkrisht Prasoon informed that the accused was arrested from the Kashmere Gate area in New Delhi.

Police put the mobile on surveillance and used local intel to check the movements of the alleged accused.

“The accused was travelling to different cities in order to evade arrest. We managed to trace his location at Kashmere gate area in New Delhi and apprehended him before he could move to next place,” Prasoon said adding that police will seek his remand in due course.

As soon as the victim’s father filed a complaint at Hoogly Police Station (WB) and a copy mailed to Goa Police on Thursday, an FIR was registered against Ganguly and a team was constituted under North Goa SP Utkrisht Prasoon with SDPO Mapusa Gajanand Prabhudessai, PI Kapil Nayak and other staff of Mapusa Police Station to trace the whereabouts of the accused.

An FIR was registered against Ganguly under Sections 461 (trespass), 354 (outraging modesty), 376 (rape) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, Section 8 of the Goa Children’s Act and Sections 6 and 8 of POCSO Act.

Sources informed three different teams of police personnel were simultaneously sent to Bhopal, New Delhi and Bangaluru to arrest the coach.

The alleged accused had travelled for the National Aquatic Championships which was held in Bhopal from August 31 to September 4 while his wife and son were in Bangaluru during the same period.

Meanwhile a senior police official informed that they have not managed to interact with the minor girl or her parent but would request their presence to take the investigation further.

The official also informed that no more complaints of harassment against the coach have been received so far.

“Our first target was to arrest the accused. We will also look into that issue in the course of the investigation,” the official said.
