Symposium on Digital Humanities held PANAJI: The department of Humanities and Social Sciences, BITS Pilani, Goa Campus organised a national symposium on ‘Digital Humanities (DH): Perspectives and Challenges’ on September 9. Prof Sukanta Chaudhuri of Jadavpur University, Kolkata said digital humanities refers to using distinctive features of digital technology to study human endeavors. He said he sees the future of DH as a relationship between computer technology and humanities.

The symposium was convened by Prof Meenakshi Raman, HoD and coordinated by Dr Amitendu Bhattacharya and Prof William Henry Spates and 30 faculty members from leading institutions took part.

Prof Souvik Bhattacharyya, Vice Chancellor, mentioned that DH efforts have led to the emergence of new formats and new forms. Prof R N Saha, Acting Director urged the department to work in association with the other campuses of BITS Pilani for a centre for DH. A panel discussion on 'Will DH undermine the traditional arts programme' was moderated by Dilip D’Souza, writer and journalist from Mumbai with Computer Science degrees from BITS Pilani and Brown University, USA.

Prof Sukanta Chauduri and Prof Supriya Chaudhuri from Jadavpur University Kolkata; Prof D Venkat Rao from EFLU Hyderabad, Orijit Sen, visiting professor at Goa University and Dr Padmini Ray Murray from Shrishti, Bangalore also spoke at the symposium.
