MARGAO
With Margao Municipal Council’s containerized treatment of mixed waste yet to receive nod from the Goa Solid Waste Corporation, and the High Court barring the civic body from open dumping of waste, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Monday said the Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo should take the Sonsodo waste to Saligao if he cannot evolve a solution to the problem.
Sardesai recalled that the Margao civic body had proposed setting up two containerized mixed waste treatment plants in the city to tackle the waste dumped at the 70-odd black spots. “The proposal has been pending with the Waste Management Corporation for a long time now, with the Corporation only raising some queries,” Sardesai said, adding that timely clearance for the two containerized waste treatment plants would have helped the civic body address the issue of mixed waste dumped at the black spots.
The Fatorda MLA pointed out that the containerized waste treatment plants were conceptualized to take care of the mixed waste finding its way in the city from across the city borders. “These plants are in operation in the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but here in Goa the government took long time to raise queries about the process, leave alone giving the sanction,” he said, adding that if the government is not interested in helping the MMC to tide over the waste problem, the Waste Management Minister may as well transport the Margao waste to the Saligao plant for treatment.
The MLA said that since Michael speaks about cleaning Sonsodo so much so that the site may even host a two-starred hotel, the Minister should either clean up the site or take the Sonsodo waste to Saligao.
