In a major initiative on the garbage disposal front in the districts of South Goa and Kushavati, taluka-level inspections of illegal dumping sites and other black spots will be initiated and necessary directions will be issued to concerned persons for the removal and proper disposal of waste from Monday.
Collector South Goa and Kushavati, Egna Cleetus informed the Committee will also inspect MRFs and other waste management infrastructure available in the district to ensure the effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules.
The review meeting was held in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 6174/2023 on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and Amendment Rules, 2026. The meeting was chaired by Egna Cleetus, IAS, Collector & District Magistrate, South Goa, H/c Kushavati Districts, in the presence of Ramesh N. Gaonkar, Additional Collector-II, South Goa, H/c Kushavati Districts.
The meeting, attended by SDMs, Mamlatdars, BDOs, Municipal Councils, and representatives from the Health, Urban Development, Tourism, GWMC, GSPCB, and Police departments, reviewed the identification of Bulk Waste Generators, illegal dumping sites, and legacy waste sites.
The District Magistrate directed all concerned departments to expedite the identification process and ensure timely submission of reports. SDMs and Deputy Collectors were also instructed to convene Taluka-level meetings and submit compliance reports within the stipulated timeframe.
The meeting further reviewed the status of staff deployment for Taluka-Level Teams and the District-Level Committee. Officials from the Goa State Pollution Control Board briefed members on the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and fortnightly reporting formats for complaints, inspections, and review activities to strengthen monitoring and effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules.
