MARGAO
Preliminary estimate of losses on account of damage caused to houses in Salcete taluka is pegged at around Rs 24.5 lakh.
Salcete revenue officials, however, were quick to point out that the estimates compiled by the village talathis are preliminary in nature, saying they expect the claims to further shoot up in the coming days, with people still filing their claims.
Salcete Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar on Tuesday submitted the preliminary estimate of the losses caused to residential houses across the taluka since Sunday caused by cyclone Tauktae, which has left a trail of destruction in almost all the villages.
A glance at the estimates compiled by the Salcete mamlatdar has revealed that almost all the villages had faced the brunt of cyclone Tauktae, with uprooted trees coming crashing down on residential houses across the taluka.
The preliminary estimate revealed that houses being damaged by uprooted trees have been reported from the 22 villages and the two Municipal areas of Margao and Cuncolim.
Areas which bore the brunt of the damage to houses, include the Nagoa-Verna area, where a couple of houses were damaged by tree fall, causing a huge loss amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh. Coastal village Colva followed suit with the preliminary estimates pegged to total losses to houses at around Rs 2.43 lakh.
The Cuncolim Municipal area also bore the brunt of the cyclone Tauktae. A number of houses were partially damaged, causing total loss of around Rs 2.33 lakh.
Navelim village (Rs 1.30 lakh) and Loutolim (Rs 1.5 lakh) were the other two villages where a couple of houses were left damaged by the tree fall during the cyclonic winds that battered the State on Sunday.
Salcete Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar informed that the estimates compiled by the village talathis are preliminary in nature.
“There may be many other houses, damaged in the Sunday cyclone, whose owners have still not informed the talathis about the damage to property. The talathis have been instructed to take all the claims of house damage into account,” he said.
