People face water shortage as power yet to be fully restored

PANAJI
Goan administration is still struggling to put things in order after two days of devastating cyclone Tauktae which played havoc in the state.

Despite the electricity department officials working round the clock pulling their optimum resources to restore power, hundreds of families in many parts of the state had to stay without electricity for almost three days.

As there is no electricity, water supply has also affected many households. Looking at the situation it will take at least a couple of more days to get things normal with respect to electricity.

“The technical staff from neighbouring states have also been brought in through flights. The department is doing its best despite difficulties, bad weather and Covid pandemic,” said Chief Electrical Engineer Raghuvir Keni of Goa Electricity Department.

The places like Panaji which have underground cabling the electricity supply are not affected. However, in places close to Panaji like Merces, Santacruz, Wodlebhat, Taleigao the electricity supply in some areas is yet to be restored.

However, rural areas of Bardez, Bicholim, Sattari and Pernem continue to be in the dark throwing people’s normal lives haywire. The most affected are children and senior citizens.

The main feeders supplying electricity to areas have been damaged in some parts. Despite this situation, people have been patient and are sympathetic towards the power department officials and workers who are working tirelessly.

Former power minister Aleixo Sequeira said, “As an ex-power minister I would like to congratulate the employees of the power department for the excellent performance of the staff, linemen, engineers and other staff members in restoring power to most parts. The damage and destruction caused by the cyclone is terrible.”

It is learned that many people from rural areas have shifted to their relative’s places in the cities which are having electricity.

On Tuesday, the electricity department officials were on their toes to restore power, however, the extent of the cyclone damage has hampered their efforts. Some of the technicians are working continuously for more than 24 hours.
