Tawadkar acquitted in assault case

Tawadkar acquitted in assault case

MARGAO
Former Sports Minister and BJP leader, Ramesh Tawadkar, who was held guilty by a trial court for assault and criminal intimidation, was on Tuesday acquitted of the charges by the South Goa Sessions Court.

Welcoming the Sessions Court order, Tawadkar said that justice has prevailed, as he reiterated that some politically connected persons had manipulated the Canacona police to lodge false and fabricated cases against him around 2017.

Tawadkar’s lawyer, Adv Dharmesh Vernekar said that the former Sports Minister has been acquitted of the charges under section 352 and 506(ii) of the IPC.

Speaking to the media after the Sessions Court pronounced the order, Tawadkar, who is now holding the post of SC & ST Commissioner, said his opponents had hatched a conspiracy to finish his

political career by manipulating the police to register a bogus FIR.

“I had to face difficult times over the last three years and a half and I have emerged victorious. My supporters and well-wishers stood by me and gave me their moral support to tide over the situation,” he said.

When asked to name the politicians responsible for the episode and whether they are from the BJP or not, Tawadkar shot back, “People know who were the persons responsible behind filing these false cases. They had even got the IT to conduct raids on me, but could not succeed. I do not want to name these people.”
