Vasco police on Friday morning arrested a 48-year-old taxi driver from Alto Dabolim on charges of kidnapping and raping a 20-year-old woman from Maharashtra.
Briefing the media on Thursday morning, Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo said the incident occurred on Thursday evening while the victim, presently residing at Ponda, was near the Dabolim Airport.
In her complaint to police, the victim stated that while she was walking near the airport, the accused, Ravichandra Bhat, came in his car (GA-07-F-0428) and offered her a lift.
“After the victim refused the lift offered to her, the accused forcibly put her inside his car and after abducting her to an isolated place along the highway, sexually assaulted her,” said PI Raposo.
“We have registered an offence of rape and abduction. The accused and victim were referred separately to GMC for a medical examination. After necessary medical examination, the accused was taken to the Vasco police station and has been lodged in police lockup,” said PI Raposo.
“Vasco police have also attached the vehicle involved in the crime and Bhat has been arrested under Sections 365, 376 of IPC. He has also been remanded to seven days in police custody,” he added.
