Two passengers in a taxi had a lucky escape after the vehicle in which they were travelling crashed against a naval compound wall barely few metres from the airport after the driver suffered a heart attack.

The driver from Socorro later died on the way to hospital.

A source said the taxi (GA-03-W-0868) was travelling from the airport towards Chicalim with two passengers who were picked up from Dabolim airport.

“The passengers claimed that the driver, Ajit Volvoikar (56) from Socorro, experienced chest pain and started losing control of the vehicle. Initially, the car hit the road divider and the driver attempted to steer it back on the road but went to the extreme left thereby crashing into the naval quarters compound, damaging it partially.”

“The driver was being moved to a hospital but died on the way. Luckily for the passengers, the taxi was not on the highway when the driver suffered the attack because taxis usually are at high speed on the highways and accidents at high speed could have seriously injured the passengers as well,” said the source.
