Tempers flared on Wednesday afternoon as taxi operators staged a protest at a car showroom in Colvale, citing issues with a malfunctioning speed governor installed in a newly purchased high-end vehicle.
Police intervention became necessary as the operators caused a disturbance inside the showroom, demanding answers from the management.
The taxi drivers expressed frustration over the installation of speed governors, which they claimed has caused significant problems for them. They sought swift resolution to their grievances.
According to taxi operator Yogesh Govekar (Mogambo), one of the taxi operator had purchased a hybrid vehicle and installed speed governor costing Rs 7,500 in the showroom.
However, during the vehicle's inspection at the Mapusa Regional Transport Office (RTO), officials found that the vehicle's speed exceeded the permissible limit, leading to the refusal of a fitness certificate.
Govekar emphasised the financial strain on owners who rely on their vehicles for livelihoods and are burdened with bank instalments.
He lamented the lack of accountability from the car dealer, the speed governor agency, and the RTO regarding the issue.
During the protest, taxi operators confronted the showroom manager, demanding prompt resolution.
Laxman Korgoankar (Bappa) asserted their stance, stating they wouldn't leave until a solution was provided.
After nearly an hour of negotiations, the car dealer agreed to address the issue and rectify the faulty speed governor, prompting the taxi operators to disperse. Colvale Police confirmed that the matter was resolved amicably.
