A tourist taxi crashed into a parked truck on the NH-66 at Karaswada in Mapusa during the early hours of Thursday, leaving one person with minor injuries and causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
According to sources, the tourist taxi was travelling towards Pernem when it rammed into a truck that had been parked along the side of the highway. The impact severely damaged the front portion of the taxi, while the occupant sustained only minor injuries.
The accident has once again drawn attention to the recurring problem of trucks and lorries being parked along the highway at Karaswada.
Locals said it is common for truck drivers to leave their vehicles parked on the roadside while they stop at nearby eateries for tea or meals. In several instances, heavy vehicles are also reportedly left parked overnight at the location.
Residents alleged that the practice has made the stretch hazardous and has led to several accidents in the past. They pointed out that at least two persons have lost their lives in earlier incidents after their vehicles crashed into parked trucks at the same spot.
Following Thursday's mishap, both the damaged tourist taxi and the truck were shifted to the Colvale Police Station.
The Colvale Police have registered the case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
