A family, yet to overcome the loss of their older daughter, is going through another emotional trauma after their 13-year-old attempted suicide over a petty reason. Not once but the juvenile tried to kill herself twice in what was supposedly an act of revenge as her mother refused to allow her to use a mobile phone.

Credible sources told The Goan that the minor’s alleged addiction to mobile phones was not approved by her family. On Thursday, the teen walked up to the terrace of her house with a blade and slit her wrist. She was rushed to the primary health centre at Aldona which attended to her immediately. “She was given first aid and sent back home. Hours later she repeated her attempt to harm herself,” the source said.

Her parents, once again, took her to the PHC that referred her to Asilo District Hospital where she is undergoing treatment. In her statement to the police, recorded in the presence of a local NGO on Friday, the juvenile confided she was angry that her mother refused to allow her to use the mobile phone to connect with friends. This prompted her to harm herself.

The Mapusa police are investigating the case even as it is not clear if the minor will be booked for the offense.

The Goan contacted the SDPO Jivba Dalvi to confirm the occurrence of the incident to which he said, “She has given her statement. We will write to the Executive Magistrate to record her statement separately. Dalvi however refused to divulge details of the case.

Sources said the teen will be counselled to understand the pros and cons of a mobile phone and any electronic device, while she will also be trained in anger management.
