Former journalist Tarun Tejpal on Monday surrendered before the Mapusa Additional Sessions Court to serve his 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in the 2013 alleged rape case involving his former colleague.
The court accepted his surrender following the Supreme Court’s direction and Tejpal was subsequently sent to the Central Jail at Colvale.
Speaking to the media after surrendering, Tejpal said, “We are in the Supreme Court, and we are sure justice will come.”
During the proceedings, Tejpal’s counsel sought permission to carry basic personal requirements, including prescribed medicines, a toothbrush, toothpaste, coconut oil, slippers and books, citing humanitarian grounds.
The State did not oppose the prescribed medicines but submitted that other items should be permitted in accordance with the Goa Prisons Rules.
After hearing both sides, the court allowed Tejpal to carry prescribed medicines, toiletry items and books.
The Supreme Court had directed Tejpal to surrender by September 21 after refusing to exempt him from surrender pending his challenge to the conviction.
