Tension in the Central Jail at Colvale reached a boiling point when two notorious factions, led by under trial Tarzan Parsekar and life convict Vijay Karbotkar, clashed in a brutal fight within the facility on Tuesday.
The feud between these rivals had been escalating for several days and despite authorities allegedly knowing of the unrest in the jail blocks, failed to take appropriate action.
“The motive behind the clash is unclear so far, but it is believed that both masterminds are engaged in a power struggle to dominate the jail after Tiger Anwar’s death,” sources said.
The clash occurred when Karbotkar was escorted back to his cell after attending a trial through video conferencing on campus. Parsekar, who is lodged in cell number 10-11, came charging at Karbotkar, leading to a fight between the two groups.
Sources said that the accused wielded steel mugs at each other and there is also a strong suspicion that most of the criminals, housed in different cells, are armed with deadly weapons.
Parsekar, a history-sheeter with several cases pending against him, was recently involved in a crime when he along with his accomplices tried to kill Ravi Shirodkar at Nagoa-Arpora in October 2022. At this time, he had barely completed serving a six-month externment from North Goa. Karbotkar, on the other hand, is serving life in connection with a murder case.
STAFF CRUNCH: Sources said the recurring lawlessness is a result of acute staff shortage, with the authorities doing very little to address the issue.
“Each outpost requires a minimum of three staff to work in shifts but the existing staff is performing 12-13 hour shifts. This has been a regular phenomenon for quite some time now,” sources said.
