Tension flared at the Tiswadi Mamlatdar’s office on Friday after one group marched there over a tussle with a rival group related to control and access to a temple in Corlim, Old Goa.

The dispute, simmering for months, pits the Jalmis against the ‘Nav Hindus’, a group of reconverted Hindus. The flashpoint came when one faction alleged that officials had handed over the temple keys to the other side without proper consultation.

Members of the aggrieved group marched to the Mamlatdar’s office in Panaji, demanding immediate action, accusing their rivals of opening the temple “illegally” and bypassing established procedures.

The protestors insisted that the administration clarify its stand and ensure fair handling of the matter.

Officials attempted to defuse the situation as tempers rose, with both sides pressing their claims to temple access and management rights. Police presence was stepped up to prevent escalation.

The Corlim temple dispute has been a source of recurring friction, reflecting deeper divisions over religious authority and community representation.
