In a significant development, residents of Aquem have been taken by surprise following the closure of the local post office, which has been merged with the Margao Head Post Office after serving the locality for several decades.
While postal authorities are understood to have taken the decision from an administrative standpoint, concerns are being raised over whether the Margao Head Post Office will be able to handle the additional workload resulting from the merger. Citizens and customers have frequently complained of delays and hardships at the Margao facility, with officials citing manpower constraints as the primary reason.
Customers visiting the Aquem Post Office, located on the busy Aquem road, were greeted by a notice pasted on the premises informing them that the office has been merged with the Margao Head Post Office. The notice requested citizens to henceforth avail of all postal services at the Margao Head Post Office.
When The Goan contacted postal officials at the Margao Head Post Office on Friday to seek clarification, a senior official confirmed that the Aquem Post Office has been merged with the Margao Head Post Office with effect from January 1, 2026.
The official stated that residents of the Aquem locality can now approach either the Margao Head Post Office or neighbouring post offices to avail postal services. “The Aquem Post Office was functioning as a non-delivery office and primarily catered to savings and other account-related services. With the merger, customers will have to access these services at the head office,” the official said.
The official further informed that the staff previously working at the Aquem Post Office has been redeployed to the Margao Head Post Office.
