Tension prevailed at Sancoale on Friday when a religious structure was found demolished behind the Kala Bhavan.
A large number of people gathered at the site and alleged that a local, Jayesh Fadte, had demolished the structure using a JCB.
Verna Police later registered an offence under Section 295 IPC on the basis of a complaint by Tulshidas Kankonkar and later arrested Fadte in the connection.
According to reports, news of the demolition of the
religious structure behind the Kala Bhavan spread quickly in the area and a large number of people rushed to the site.
A Verna police team rushed to the site and tried to pacify the people, but they demanded that the culprit be booked immediately.
Locals alleged that the place belonged to the Comunidade and that one Jayesh Fadte, who was allegedly responsible for the demolition, had claimed ownership to the land.
Local Panch, Narayan Naik, was also at the site and tried to intervene in
the matter.
“According to my knowledge, the land belongs to the Communidade, but locals claim that their place of worship was demolished by Fadte. The Communidade should take action against Fadte or else, Fadte should prove ownership to the property,” said Naik.
Mormugao DySP Sunita Sawant visited the site and the aggrieved locals were pacified when Sawant assured to take action against the culprit.
DySP Sawant later told reporters that Fadte was arrested in the matter.
“We have received a complaint from a resident that their religious sentiments have been hurt and accordingly, we registered an offence in Verna police station under Section 295 of IPC and Jayesh Fadte has been arrested,” said DySP Sawant.
