Goans are packing their bags and setting off on their own getaways this summer, opting for short trips or heading to cooler destinations to escape the scorching heat that has gripped the State.
While domestic tourists throng the State all-round the year including summer months, a shift in trend is being witnessed with Goans themselves looking for respite from the rising temperatures or just wanting to explore places.
Many locals are opting for short trips to nearby destinations such as Mahabaleshwar, Matheran, and Panchgani in Maharashtra, or heading to the serene hills of Munnar in Kerala to beat the heat with even Coorg and Ooty on their travel list.
Some others are choosing to explore offbeat destinations in Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and other Himalayan places known for their freezing temperature and breathtaking landscapes.
“These destinations are a stark contrast to the coastal vibes of Goa. It’s a refreshing change from the sweltering heat. We are amongst those in need of such a break,” quipped Priyanka Kamat of Caranzalem who has scheduled a visit to Kashmir and Ladakh with her family next week.
Goans are not only choosing to travel to different domestic destinations but are also opting for a more independent approach to planning their trips. Instead of relying on travel agencies, many are switching to online resources and recommendations from fellow travellers who have explored these places.
"Embarking on our own travel adventures is an adventure by itself. Unlike previous years, I didn't book my trip through a travel agency this time. I did my research on Google and read reviews from other travellers who had been to the places I wanted to visit,” shared Margao-based Joy Gomes, who planned his short trip to Mahabaleshwar independently.
Kirti Arlekar, who just returned from a mini trip to Murudeshwar echoed similar sentiments while another traveller Anusha Keni who is planning a visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar and Wagah border opined that information through online platforms has given them a wide range of preferences and interests. “I took a few tips from my relatives who visited these two places before. Additionally, the hotel where I booked my accommodation is providing a complete tour package,” she said.
This shift in travel patterns has been welcomed by the tourism industry in other domestic destinations and appreciated by the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG). “Goans are visiting numerous places which we explored less in the past. Summer is the best time to visit these destinations. There are several Goans who have also planned short vacations in Sri Lanka, Dubai, and other overseas tourist hubs,” TTAG President Nilesh Shah said.
