In yet another major ATM theft reported in the State, unknown persons decamped with cash amounting to Rs 7.83 lakh by breaking the ATM from the ICICI ATM booth near the Military camp, Rawanfond in the wee hours of Thursday.

The Margao police swung into action and drafted a police team to neighbouring Karnataka in search of the accused persons.

The incident is believed to have occurred in the wee hours of Thursday at around 3.17 am when the unknown accused persons effected entry into the ICICI ATM booth by concealing their identity.

The accused later broke the lock of the back room of the booth and damaged the electrical connections and decamped with “Diebold ATM Machine” in a Maruti Omni van. The machine was later dumped at an isolated place at Don Khuris, next to the railway track after taking out Rs 7.83 lakh.

An offence under Section 457, 427, 380 of IPC has been registered against the unknown persons following a complaint lodged by Narendra Pachigar, working for Financial Software & Systems Pvt Ltd.

No sooner the theft of the unguarded ATM machine spread soon after dawn, the Margao police led by PI Tulsidas Naik rushed to the site. Sub-divisional Police Officer, DySP Shivenu Bhushan also visited the site to assist in the investigations.

The police roped in the services of a sniffer dog and finger print experts to assist in the investigations.

A visit to the isolated place near Don Khuris revealed that the accused broke open the ATM into pieces before laying their hands on the cash. The Maruti Omni van was later found abandoned near a hotel close to the Margao railway station.

PI Tulsidas said the police immediately traced the owner of the Maruti Omni van, who insisted that he had parked his vehicle near the railway station, when it was stolen by the miscreants.

Saying that the police have started investigations into the case, PI Tulsidas said a police team has left for Karnataka to trace the miscreants following information that the accused have crossed the border after committing the crime. Further investigations are on.
