In an early Sunday morning heist, unidentified persons decamped with an Automated Teller Machine containing Rs 19 lakh belonging to Union Bank of India located near the Succor church.
The ATM was later found abandoned in the bushes just 500 meters from the bank without the cash.
Porvorim police immediately rushed to the spot on receiving information and pressed a dog squad which did not yield any clues. A finger print expert was also summoned who took fingerprints of the site where the ATM was located.
Disclosing the modus operandi, police sources said that the robbers must have committed the theft at around 3 am. The CCTV wires were found cut as the footage showed blurred images of the persons. There was also no security guard manning the ATM.
Porvorim police have registered a case under Sections 454,457 and 350 of Indian Penal Code. Police sub-inspector Pratik Bhat is conducting further investigations into the case.
It may be recalled that a similar theft had occurred in Agarwada, Pernem where an ATM containing Rs 18 lakh belonging to a nationalised bank was robbed. The machine was later found broken and empty near the Agarwada forest.
