This is no music to their ears! Dept puts cops in line of fire over noise plaints

PANAJI

The suspension of Anjuna police constable could be the first domino to fall in a sweeping internal crackdown within the department. This disciplinary action is just the tip of the iceberg with a broader investigation now zeroing in on the conduct of other police personnel, particularly those on night duty.

Highly placed police sources revealed to The Goan that not only Anjuna -- where complaints are on the rise -- but other coastal police stations are also closely monitored to determine if officers have been ignoring noise pollution complaints or failing to escalate them to higher-ups.

“Any violations are being noticed. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against those found derelict in their duties,” the officer said.

The Duty Master was suspended on Saturday for not acting on numerous complaints of noise pollution and allegedly colluding with nightclubs to allow music beyond permissible hours. Sources said an internal inquiry into multiple ignored grievances prima facie established his guilt. A disciplinary enquiry is initiated against him even as other personnel are also under scanner.

Sources further stated that the suspended constable is also accused of abusing his official position for personal gain, which will be probed in the inquiry.

The Bombay High Court at Goa has been monitoring the issue through a public interest litigation demanding a complete ban on loud music. Amid allegations of inaction by Anjuna police, the department officials stated they strictly enforce noise regulations, especially as the tourist season approaches.

“We are forming squads on rotation which will include inspectors and subordinates from different police stations, to conduct surprise inspections in the party-heavy areas. We have set up a network to alert us about loud parties and anyone flouting the law or court orders will face legal action,” the source said, adding the colluding cops will also face strict action.

Amid growing tension in Anjuna, local police booked five cases against nightclubs and restaurants for noise violations this month alone.

In response to concerns about alleged coordination gaps between the police and the Committee led by the District Collector; another senior officer dismissed such claims.
