As broken doors and damaged tiles welcomed ladies into the Sulabh toilet in the New Market area of the city, questions came to the fore over public sanitation in times of Covid-19 pandemic.
With the New Market playing host to around 465 shops, employing a large number of women, the market area ought to have adequate sanitation facilities in place to cater to their requirements.
Sadly, even the lone toilet block housed near the pick-up stand is not maintained as a result of which the users are forced to use the facility in unsanitary conditions.
Women as well as the President of the New Market Association Vinod Shirodkar bitterly complained over the state of the lone Sulabh toilet block in the market area. “How do you expect the women to use the toilet when the door is in a damaged state. The tiles are also found damaged. Can you expect the girls employed in the shops to use the toilet in such unsanitary conditions?” Shirodkar questioned.
He further demanded that the Margao municipality should sanitize the toilet block daily given that hundreds of people are using it every day.
A Sulabh official told The Goan that the toilet is in a damaged state as tree roots have surfaced in the block, damaging the tiles as well as the door. “We are trying to fix the problem at the earliest,” the official said.
