Thousands of Goans converged in the capital Panaji on Friday to participate in the protest march against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) which culminated in a public meetingat the iconic Azad Maidan.
The protest organised under the aegis of ‘Goa against CAA’ had got the backing of the Catholic Church and had upset the government which first apparently attempted to stifle it by invoking section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) but later relented and withdrew the notification.
The protesters resolved that till the government rolls back the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) they will not provide any info for NPR or 2021 population census.
The protest rally ended with a maga-meet at Azad Maidan. The speakers at a meeting in Azad Maidan stated that the combo of CAA, NRC and NPR will be against the poor people of all castes and religions as these people will face difficulty to prove their nationality and feared that such laws will be used as tool to harass people.
A Lawyer from Assam’s Guwahati High Court who is fighting the rights for people Advocate A. S. Tapadeer said that CAA, NPR and NRC when combined together the people will have to face problems.
“As per our experience in Assam about NRC not only muslims but all Dalit, tribes, Christians will suffer due to CAA, NRC and foreigners tribunal”, he said. He congratulated Goa people for Goa becoming united against CAA.
He said that Assam has become infamous because of NRC, detention center and huge number of stateless people. People are suffering in bad condition of detention centers in Assam. People have been kept with the criminals in makeshift detention centers in regular jails, he added.
He appealed to people to prepare documentation inorder to face NRC in Goa as the government will force the registry on the people despite opposition.
