The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) sealed three cashew nut shops and a warehouse in Calangute on Tuesday and seized 1 tonne of substandard cashew nuts valued at Rs 1.5 lakh.
An FDA team conducted a raid on cashew nut shops in Calangute and found that substandard cashew nuts were being sold in three shops. They also discovered that poor-quality cashew nuts were being mixed into half-kilo packets and kept for sale.
Officials also inspected the warehouse of one cashew shop and found poor-quality cashew nuts stored on the premises. Moreover, a licence from the FDA had not been obtained for the warehouse.
The FDA later sealed the three shops along with the warehouse and also seized 1 tonne of poor-quality cashew nuts valued at Rs 1.5 lakh from all four locations. Cases have been registered against the shop owners concerned under the FDA Act. Since there was also a difference in the weight of these packets, a report in this regard will be submitted by the FDA to the Department of Weights and Measures.
The operation was carried out by a team of FDA officials comprising Richard Noronha, Rajaram Patil, Amit Mandrekar, Safia Khan, and Lenin D’Sa.
