Three out of 4 couples victorious in poll contest

Out of the four couples that contested the Goa State Assembly elections three have won the elections and one couple lost. While Babush Monserrate and wife Jennifer Monserrate have won their respective seats from their constituencies, Savitri Kavlekar and husband and Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar have both lost. Savitri was contesting election from Sanguem constituency while her husband Babu Kavlekar was contesting from Quepem. While her opponent Subhash Phaldesai 7824 votes, Savitri’s vote share was 7295 and her husband Babu Kavlekar could bag 11,393 votes. He was defeated by Alton D’Costa who got 14,994 votes. Savitri was the first time contestant while her husband Babu was a defector, who left MGP in 2019 to join BJP and get deputy chief minister’s position.

Babush Monserrate got a margin of only 714 votes over his rival Utpal Parrikar to retain his seat in Panaji. He got 6531 votes in his pocket while Utpal earned 5857 votes in his late father Manohar Parrikar’s constituency Panaji. The Ponjekars showed their loyalty to their former MLA, ex-Chief Minister and former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar by voting for his son Utpal, who got little less than his rival.       

Babush’s wife, Jennifer Monserrate who contested from Taleigao defeated her nearest rival, BJP’s Tony Rodrigues with a total of 10,167 votes. Tony’s vote count was 8126.  

The second couple that won is the Ranes who contested on BJP candidature. The health minister in BJP government Vishwajit Rane who was contesting from Valpoi retained his seat gaining 14462 votes against his closest rival Manoj Parab who got 6377. Vishwaji’s wife Deviya Rane who contested election from Poriem bagged 17,816 votes, defeating her opponent Vishwajit K Rane from AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) who bagged only 3873 votes. Coincidently her husband’s name and her immediate contestant in the election also bear the same name, Vishwajit Rane.

The third winning couple is the Lobos “ Michael and Delilah Lobo who contested on Congress seats. Contesting from Siolim Delilah pocketed 9699 votes and her closest opponent Dayanand Mandrekar got 7972 votes. Her husband Michael Lobo won the Calangute seat defeating BJP’s Joseph Sequeira who got 4306 votes. Michael bagged 9285 votes in total.
