PORVORIM
Acting on orders of the Mapusa deputy collector, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) demolished three houses by the side of Mapusa“Panaji Highway at Guirim on Wednesday.
According to sources, these houses owned by Dharma Lotlikar, Vishnu Kaskar and Pushpavai Salgaonkar were illegally built on land owned by the PWD.
“The government had acquired this land in 1979 for the purpose of widening the NH17 and PWD had taken possession of the land in 1981,” the source said
The deputy collector then issued demolition notices and the demolition began at about 10 am in the presence of a police force.
Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar, Guirim Sarpanch Reema Gadekar, Deputy Sarpanch Sunny Nanodkar, Babaji Gadker and government officials were present during the demolition drive.
Incidentally, the demolition work hampered traffic proceeding from Mapusa to Panaji and vehicles were held up in a long queue right up to the Green Park junction. Police had a difficult time regulating traffic during the demolition drive.
