Forest officials probing the four tiger deaths in Golavali-Sattari had some reason for hope, as fresh tiger marks were sighted near the carcass of a pregnant cow believed to have been killed by a tiger at Derode-Nagargao in Sattari taluka on Friday night.
After being severely criticised by locals of having failed to respond to the loss of livestock, which is believed to have led a group of locals to kill the four tigers, forest officials were quick to act this time round.
Besides swiftly conducting investigations in the matter, a forest official said the farmer would be given compensation for the loss of his cow.
According to reports, Ladko Jadhav’s pregnant cow had gone missing and after a search in the area, Jadhav found his dead cow near a water body in the adjoining forest area.
Jadhav then alerted the forest department about the presence of a tiger. Forest officials rushed to the spot and found the tiger marks on and around the carcass, indicating the presence of a tiger in the area.
When contacted, DCF Vikas Desai confirmed that the cow had been killed by a tiger.
“We were informed about the incident by the farmer and our entire team along with a veterinary officer rushed
to site and found tiger marks on and around the carcass of the pregnant cow,” informed Desai.
“The farmer has applied for compensation and we have assured him that whatever compensation announced by the State government would be given to him after following necessary procedures.”
“We will compensate the farmer after we receive the veterinary doctor’s report and we have assured him that there would be no delay in the matter,” said Dessai.
He added that the a post-mortem was conducted on the carcass of the cow,
before being disposed off in the area.
