Failure to lift dry waste packed in plastic bags is fast turning into a nuisance at Tivim.
Fingers are pointed at the Science and Technology Department, which has failed to lift the waste for more than three months.
The number of plastic bags with dry waste has been steadily growing and the open area allotted for the waste dump is overflowing with the bags.
To add to the misery, stray dogs have started breaking open the plastic bags and spreading the waste all around, creating a mess at the site near the office of the
Tivim panchayat.
The Tivim panchayat has a proper plan in place to collect village dry waste on a daily basis. The waste collected in plastic bags is dumped in a specified open space near the panchayat office.
The only problem is that the panchayat has to depend on the Science and Technology Department to lift and dispose off the garbage.
"We have an arrangement with the Science and Technology Department to dispose off dry waste. We collect the dry waste in plastic bags and store it in the open space near the panchayat. Normally, the vehicle of the Science and Technology Department collects it regularly," said Deputy Sarpanch Shivdas Kambli.
After every 15 days, the Science and Technology Department used to regularly collect two to three truck loads of dry waste from the Tivim panchayat.
"Surprisingly, for the last three months, the department has failed to collect the dry waste for reasons best known to it," Kambli added.
He said after the Chaturthi celebration, the panchayat members plan to meet officials of the department concerned.
In a recent gram sabha, the Tivim panchayat had unveiled its plan to start door-to-door garbage collection in the village. The panchayat had plans to buy one vehicle for garbage collection through funds from the 14th Finance Commission. Every household would also get a set of two waste bins for collection of dry and wet wastes, the panchayat said.
