Dhirios is back on the agenda of the ensuing Assembly polls with Trinamool Congress leader MLA Churchill Alemao promising hundreds of bullfight lovers at Benaulim on Friday that the TMC will bring a Bill in Parliament to legalize dhirios in the state.

Churchill said TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, and MPs Luizinho Faleiro, Derek O’Brien and Mohua Mitra, besides other MPs will table the Bill in Parliament to accord legal status for dhirios on the lines of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing the media, the TMC MLA said if Tamil Nadu can legalize bullfights in the South Indian state, dhirios in Goa too can be legalized.

While urging the people of Goa to repose their faith and trust in the TMC and its leader Mamata Banerjee, Churchill said he had got a Bill drafted by his legal counsel Adv Radharao Gracias, but could not table the same in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

“I am now handing over the Bill to the TMC leaders, including MPs Luizinho Faleiro, Derek O’Brien and Mohua Mitra to study the Bill and table the same in Parliament”, he said.

Openly declaring his support to legal dhirios in the state, Churchill told the bullfight lovers that he and the TMC will fight to ensure that bullfight sport is made legal, giving relief to the hundreds of families rearing cattle.

“Today, I invited thousands of bullfight lovers at Benaulim to hand out a promise that the TMC will stand by them and fight to get the bullfights legalized. I had discussed the matter with Mamata Didi and she too has assured me to take up the matter at the highest level in Parliament to give bullfights the legal status”, he added.

The issue over the banned bullfights takes the centre stage every election, especially in Salcete and Tiswadi talukas, besides other areas, with politicians of all hues jostling to hand out assurances to the bullfight owners and lovers to legalize dhirios in the state.
