Allaying fears over the working of the state-of-art public utility project on Candolim beach, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) on Thursday said there was no sewerage discharge from the toilet block and the sewerage treatment plant was functioning well.
The GTDC, however, said that there was minor spillage of sewerage when the STP technician was clearing the valve of the aeration tank on May 14. “The assistant engineer and executive engineer conducted a site inspection today (Thursday) and at present, the STP is operating in a hygienic condition and there is no foul smell emitting from the toilet block,” said Allan Pereira, Executive Engineer, Project Cell, GTDC.
The GTDC in a statement released here said that on May 14 the STP technician had to open the outlet valve of the aeration tank to clear a blockage. “This resulted in a minor spillage of sewerage in an open space and foul smell spread in the area. Immediate steps were initiated by the Project Cell of the GTDC and the blockage has been cleared and the toilet block and STP are now functioning properly,” the Executive Engineer informed.
The GTDC has also refuted statements by the Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF) that sewage water was being released in an open space by the state-of-the-art toilet.
“The toilet block is not creating any unhygienic condition for locals and tourists nor is it polluting the environment,” Pereira said.
The Goan on Thursday reported that due to overflowing of the septic tank, sewerage water was released in the garden around the public utility project and that it was emitting a foul smell.
It was also reported that the Calangute Constituency Forum had made a representation to the Health Officer of the Candolim Primary Health Centre against the release of sewerage water in the open space near the public toilet on Candolim beach.
