With thousands of tourists thronging the various beaches in Canacona, hotels and shacks in the coastal areas have been overbooked and tourists are now camping in their vehicles and caravans to usher in the New Year.
Many domestic tourists began arriving in the taluka in the last few days and were seen moving all over the coastal areas in search of rooms.
According to shacks and hut owners, there has been an unusual rush of domestic tourists arriving in the taluka in a desperate search of rooms/accommodation since the last three days.
With all rooms fully booked along Canacona’s coast, many tourists were found making temporary arrangements and even converting their own vehicles as makeshift rooms.
A few domestic tourists were seen staying in their own vehicles for the night, after parking the same at some isolated places along the beach. Some were even seen having their meals by squatting outside their vehicles.
“We have no option, but had to pass the night in our vehicle itself and we expect to do the same on December 31, after enjoying the midnight at one of the New Year party locations,” informed a tourist, who was having his breakfast outside their car at Agonda beach.
According to reports, rooms have been fully booked till January 2 all over Canacona’s coast, right from Khola beach in the north of the taluka to Polem beach, the southernmost part of the State.
Meanwhile, the movement of numerous vehicles has led to severe traffic jams at the world-famous Palolem beach, with police struggling to regulate traffic along with narrow roads.
Incidentally, while a few policemen have been deputed for traffic arrangements, traffic personnel stationed at strategic places were seen stopping vehicles, especially non-Goan registered vehicles, to inspect vehicle documents.
