The alleged “dadagiri” of vendors in Mapusa market has come under the spotlight again, with a local trader approaching police claiming that a fellow vendor threatened and intimidated him following a dispute over the use of space outside his stall.
Trader Abhijit Ashok Shinde has alleged that a merchant identified as Hussain confronted him at his stall, later stood outside and loudly challenged him to come out following an argument over the manner in which goods were being displayed by vendors in the market.
Shinde, in his complaint to Mapusa Police, alleged that the incident occurred after he objected to a vendor displaying goods in a manner that was obstructing stalls in his line and affecting business.
Shinde further alleged that following the dispute, a merchant entered his stall and questioned him over his intervention. After an exchange of words, Hussain allegedly left the stall, stood outside and began loudly provoking Shinde to come out.
He alleged that the manner in which Hussain behaved gave him the impression that there was an intention to assault him.
In his complaint, Shinde described the incident as “dadagiri” and alleged that some vendors in the market were creating a sense of intimidation among other traders. He urged police to take prompt action to prevent the situation from escalating into a serious incident.
Mapusa Police are yet to register an FIR in connection with the complaint but have assured the complainant that the matter will be looked into.
The complaint comes just days after concerns were raised over the growing problems faced by traders and consumers in the main Mapusa market, including the haphazard parking of two-wheelers that obstructs movement.
