Traditional fishermen flag illegal fishing before M’rashtra MP Maharashtra MP Bhaskar Murlidhar Bhagare evinces keen interest in the traditional fishing equipment at the Benaulim beach on Thursday.

MARGAO
Traditional fisherman from Benaulim, Pele Fernandes, on Thursday made a fervent plea to Maharashtra Member of Parliament Bhaskar Murlidhar Bhagare to take up with the Central government the issue of large-scale fishing activities by outside fishing vessels close to Goa’s coast in violation of fishing laws.

The MP representing Dindori, Maharashtra, was at Benaulim beach on Thursday morning during his stay at a local star hotel when Pele explained how excessive fishing by outside vessels was resulting in the depletion of marine resources.

He pointed out that traditional fishermen eking out a living through fishing with traditional gear are the worst affected by the overexploitation of marine resources through illegal means.

Bhagare assured Pele that he would take up the matter with the Centre and seek steps to protect the interests of traditional fishermen.
