As part of its annual pre-monsoon food safety drive, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Thursday intensified inspections across commercial establishments in Mapusa and ordered two food businesses to suspend operations after serious hygiene violations were detected.
FDA officials conducted inspections at Angod, Mapusa, during which two establishments – M/s Aflatoon and M/s Pappu Dum Biryani – were found operating under unhygienic conditions that posed a potential risk to public health.
Following the inspection, the FDA directed both establishments to immediately halt operations until the deficiencies are rectified and food safety standards are brought into compliance with regulatory requirements.
Officials said the action forms part of a wider Statewide pre-monsoon campaign aimed at ensuring food businesses maintain proper sanitation and hygiene standards during the rainy season, when the risk of food contamination and food-borne illnesses tends to increase.
The FDA has taken a particularly serious view of violations detected at M/s Aflatoon. According to officials, the establishment has repeatedly been found violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 despite being inspected and warned on multiple occasions in the past.
“During the latest inspection, M/s Aflatoon was once again found operating in unhygienic conditions. The establishment has a history of non-compliance and has been repeatedly found violating food safety norms during earlier inspections as well,” an FDA official said.
In view of the repeated violations, the Directorate has decided to initiate legal proceedings against the establishment under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The department warned that surprise inspections will continue across the State and strict action will be taken against establishments found compromising food safety standards.
