CANACONA
Recent fatal mishaps in different parts of the State have prompted the Traffic Police to get cracking in different parts of Canacona, as they arrested two riders and penalised motorists for drunken driving, riding without helmets and other offences under the Motor Vehicles Act and IPC.
According to Canacona (Traffic) Police Inspector Vinayak Patil, police are keeping a strict tab on motorists in Canacona taluka.
“In view of fatal road mishaps reported in the recent past due to rash and negligent driving and under the influence of alcohol, the Canacona Traffic Police have begun a drive against motorists driving under influence of alcohol and endangering human life, as well as riders not wearing helmets.”
“We found two cases of riders under the influence of alcohol and both have been arrested under Section 185 MV Act and Sections 279, 336 IPC for rash and negligent riding under influence of alcohol on public road endangering human life/safety. Both vehicles have also been impounded,” said PI Patil.
“Now, it's not just a fine of Rs 2,000 for drunken driving, but an FIR is also registered if one is found driving under the influence of liquor. Hopefully, this strict drive will be a deterrent for other motorists,” he added.
PI Patil said the Canacona Traffic Cell has booked a total of 331 cases against motorists caught riding without helmet since New Year.
