Marking yet another warning over the accident-prone Bambolim stretch, the Traffic Department has once again written to the Public Works Department (PWD), pressing for urgent remedial measures to prevent further loss of life on the NH-66 stretch from Merces junction to Agassaim, up to the new Zuari Bridge.
The department has recommended that the height of the central divider be raised by at least one metre to prevent vehicles from jumping lanes during mishaps. As a short-term step, it has sought the placement of concrete barrier blocks of similar height along the median.
The department also urged the installation of speed radar cameras at strategic locations and an adequate number of traffic signages indicating “Speed Limit” and “Go Slow” to alert motorists approaching the downhill curve and service road.
The latest communication follows the fatal crash on the Bambolim slope on Tuesday, in which a speeding tanker crossed the divider and rammed into a car, killing two national-level Sepak Takraw personalities.
Police sources told The Goan that similar recommendations had been sent to the PWD on multiple occasions in the past, calling for raised dividers and stronger signage along the entire stretch, but little has been done.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inspected the site at Bambolim, where the horrific accident claimed two lives in the wee hours of Tuesday.
CM has directed PWD & Traffic Police have been directed to put in place measures to prevent mishaps at the zone.
