A long queue of vehicles extending for over 5 hours was observed on the Goa-Belgaum highway at Chorla Ghat on Sunday evening.
The reason: Two heavy trucks which broke down along the way during the late afternoon around 6 km away from the Keri village and one tanker fallen at the side of the road completely affecting traffic on either side.
Valpoi police along with the transport department continued working all evening to ease the flow of traffic, but due to the heavy blockage on either side, they did not manage to clear the road till late night. The queues extended to over 10 km on either side.
It may be recalled that due to the closure of the Goa-Belgaum route via Anmod Ghat for repairs, all traffic is diverted via the Sanquelim Chorla Road which led to a higher number of vehicles plying this route.
Valpoi PSI Gurish Malik and staff rushed to the spot, but managed to move the trucks only after a struggle of 2 hours.
When contacted Inspector Shivram Vaigankar said that so far no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, locals from Keri village complained that even though the road is closed for heavy vehicles, yet many vehicles are seen moving along the route creating problems for the two-wheelers, four-wheelers and passenger vehicles along this route.
Locals have also complained that the road is getting damaged due to the plying of the 12-tyred heavy vehicles due to which they will have to face great inconvenience during the monsoon season.
