The issues of traffic congestion on National Highway No. 17, the sewage treatment plant at Socorro, biodiversity, TCP permissions for multi-storied complexes, etc., were discussed in the Gram Sabha of the village panchayat of Socorro held on Sunday.
The social activist Sorter D’Souza mentioned that the traffic congestion on the stretch of road from O’Cocqueiro junction to Socorro bazaar has nowadays become an everyday affair because of the faulty traffic management of the State.
D’Souza further mentioned that the Town and Country Planning department issues technical clearance to multi-storied residential complexes without verifying ownership documents of the property. When the file reaches the village panchayat, they are compelled to issue NOC for the construction of the building even if the ownership documents are not proper. If objections are raised by the panchayat, then the builder goes to the Directorate of Panchayat and obtains NOC by hook or crook. This is a wrong procedure. The file should first come to the panchayat, and after checking all the documents of ownership of the land, the file should go to TCP for technical clearance, said Mr. Souza.
The villagers mentioned that though the government has approved the elevated corridor project from Porvorim to Guirim, the villagers are in the dark about the movement of vehicles during the construction of this elevated corridor. The traffic department should make presentations of the movement of vehicles during the construction of the elevated corridor for the benefit of the residents of Porvorim and Saligao constituency.
The villagers raised the issue of disposing of sewage water generated due to the Sewage Treatment Plant. The capacity of the STP is 20 MLD, and hence, after the treatment of sewage, thousands of liters of wastewater will be generated. How this water will be disposed of, questioned the villagers.
