Traffic on the busy Belagavi-Goa road via Chorla which was disrupted since late Sunday resumed from Wednesday evening as authorities have completed the work to insert an additional pipeline at the diversion on River Malaprabha near Kusmalli.

If authorities are to be believed the work on the new bridge at Kusmalli is also likely to be completed by June 30.

It may be recalled that the diversion on the Malaprabha River near the Old Kusmalli bridge near Jamboti had partly caved in due to sudden rise in the inflow of river water due to incessant rains last week.

This had resulted in diversion of traffic on Belagavi-Goa Chorla road via Khanapur due to which commuters had to cover about 15 extra kms to reach Belagavi and Goa.

"Earlier, there were only two pipelines on the diversion that couldn't hold the extra flow of water. Now, we have added two more pipelines to enable to contain higher flow of water," NHAI Executive Engineer Rajendra said.

He added that the concrete slab on one side of the bridge is complete and the remaining concrete slab would be laid on June 30, after which the bridge can be thrown open for the regular traffic movement.

"The new bridge is 12 metres wide and can accommodate two-way traffic comfortably," he said.

NHAI Project Director Bhuvaneshwar Kumar is also closely monitoring the work so that commuters can comfortably travel via Kusmalli.
