Mapusa Police have arrested two individuals, including the father of a minor, in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl near Camarkhajan, Mapusa.
The incident occurred around 7.45 pm when a 16-year-old boy, allegedly riding a motorcycle without a licence, struck Akanshaya Boro as she was crossing the road.Boro succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Mapusa.
Police have identified the pillion rider as 18-year-old Rihan Shaikh, who, along with the minor rider, fled the scene after the collision without offering any assistance to the victim. The two later attempted to conceal the damaged motorcycle.
The father of the minor was taken into custody for allowing his underage son to operate a two-wheeler without a valid driving licence. The minor, who has been booked for his role in the incident, will face proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).
Police have registered a case under several provisions of the BNS 2023, including Sections 281 (rash driving), 125(a) and 125(b) (causing death by negligence and failure to report the incident), 105, 45, and 46. Additionally, Sections 134(a) and 134(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertain to duties following an accident, have also been invoked. The case has been forwarded to the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Mapusa, for further proceedings.
Contrary to earlier media reports suggesting that the accident occurred at the busy Peddem junction, Mapusa Police, citing eyewitness accounts and on-ground verification, clarified that the collision took place approximately 150 metres away from the junction.
