A youth hailing from West Bengal has been arrested on charges of stealing phones, and five phones and a smartwatch worth Rs 3.5 lakh have been recovered from him.
On May 27, Pernem police registered a complaint by Anil Rathod (33), a native of Vijayapura-Karnataka but residing at Casarvarnem-Pernem, stating that his mobile phone was stolen from the cabin of his truck parked opposite the IOC petrol pump along the NH66 at Dhargal-Pernem between 2 am and 3.30 am on May 15.
A police team led by PSI Sahil S. Naik, based on technical surveillance and with the assistance of the CMC Cell of SP (North) Porvorim, traced the accused, Saidul Mandal (24), a native of West Bengal but residing at Calangute, to a location in Colvale. He was later placed under arrest.
During his arrest, Mandal was found with four other stolen phones and one smartwatch, all worth Rs 3.5 lakh. PSI Sahil Naik is conducting further investigation into the case under the supervision of Pernem PI Sachin Lokre, Pernem SDPO Salim Shaikh and under the guidance of SP (North) Rahul Gupta.
